The introductory year for the All- Star game was held at Comiskey Park in Chicago on July 6, 1933 . Arch Ward, a sports editor for the Chicago Tribune approached American League president Will Harridge with a proposal for what Ward termed this game as “the game of century”. The inaugural game attracted more than 49,000 fans. Babe Ruth, Lefty Grove, Jimmie Foxx, Lou Gehrig, Gabbie Hartnett and Pie Traynor were the lead players. The fans roared in acclamation after the first All Star Game was won by the American League on the strong point of Ruth homer. The fans were treated by Ruth and Frankie Frisch performance in all the nine innings. Eventually the game proved to be a platform for aging American League slugger Babe Ruth. In All Star history Babe Ruth hit the first home run. A two run shot in the third inning, made a “magnificent” running catch in the right field and was 2- for-4 with a game saving catch which saved his league's 4-2 success. With the success of 1933 All Star game, it became one of the appreciated traditions in baseball. |
