The third version of what was soon to become “Midsummer Classic” was hosted by Cleveland 's Municipal Stadium on July 8, 1985 . The reason behind the short supply of tickets was the success of the previous two games. The third All Star game was uneventful and mundane. Due to the performance of Jimmie Foxx the American League won for the third consecutive year. Game's top hitter Al Simmons of the White Sox scored 6-for 13 showing, a 462 average. It was his last All Star showing. Lou Gehrig played the entire game for the American League. Gehrig was considered to be the most frustrated hitter. In nine All Star at-bats he was hitless and a Triple Crown winner in 1934. The other first baseman for the AL, Jimmie Foxx played the game at third base. The first pitcher to win two All Star games was Lefty Gomez. The winning story of the American League for the third year was a Jimmie Foxx show. Though Hank Greenberg compiled 101 RBI before the All Star break but he failed to make the All Star team. Lou Gehrig secured a two-run homer, giving the AL a lead it never surrendered.
