In 1939 the All Star game accomplished new dimensions. Joe McCarthy as a manager of American League started six of his hometown Yankees. Red Ruffing, Bill Dickey, Joe DiMaggio, George Selkirk, Red Rolfe and Joe Gordon were the six Yankees used in the starting lineup. Six hits by Junior Circuit's and a solo shot by Joe DiMaggio. The whole game was played by non-pitching starters. In the sixth inning Bob feller entered the game, a twenty-year old boy of Cleveland permitted just one hit over 3 2/3 innings. The American League won the game, 3-1. In baseball history the New York Yankees recorded the highest winning percentage in that season. Previous All star games were dominated by the heavy hitters but this game proved to be the most potent offense. The '39 game was the first such game which occurred a week after Lou Gehrig received farewell from baseball. He was honored as the luckiest man on the face of the earth.
