Joe McCarthy, the New York Yankees' skipper and American League All-Star manager, had been accused of favoring his players and challenged to win without them. During this contest, not one of his six Yankees played and he still emerged victorious. The 1943 Midsummer Classic was the first All-Star Game ever started during the evening hours. This was the first All-Star Game, and the only one during the twentieth century, in which no player from the New York Yankees franchise played. The 1943 Midsummer Classic was played on July 13, 1943 at Shibe Park in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania . This was the first Midsummer Classic played at Shibe Park . Due to the war effort, many of the previous standout players such as Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams, Johnny Mize, Pete Reiser and others were absent. In the first inning, the National League took the lead on a run batted in Stan Musial, Who was making his first of twenty-four straight All-Star appearance.
The senior circuit did not hold their lead for long as the American League began its comeback against Mort Cooper. With the junior circuit up 5-1, Vince DiMaggio stepped up for the National League. He had singled as a pinch-hitter in the fourth and stayed in the game. Next, he tripled off of Tex Hughson in the seventh and scored on a fly ball. In the ninth, he hit a long home run off Hughson, Still, Hughson managed to wrap up yet another American League win for their eighth All-Star victory. Vince DiMaggio went three for three and had a home run, a triple and a single. Had he also hit a double, he would have become the first player in All-Star history to hit for the cycle. Led by Vince DiMaggio's three hits, the National League out-hit the American League, 10-8, but could only managed single runs in the first, seventh and ninth innings, as it lost for the eighth time in eleven All Star Games. The American League extended their win by defeating the National League by 5-3.
