Once again pitching dominated as the All-Stars faced off in Anaheim Stadium. ’Strikeout classic would have been a more appropriate title for this Midsummer Classic, which featured twelve pitchers all of which had at least one strikeout for an All-Star record thirty strikeouts. The 38th All Star Game was played at the Anaheim Stadium in Anaheim, California. With the attendance of 46,309 fans witnessing the longest All Star Game and home runs accounted for all the scoring. This Midsummer Classic Game was played on the July 11, 1967. The National League took an early 1-0 lead when Dick Allen took Dean Chance deep to left in the second inning. Baltimore’s Brooks Robinson got the American League even in the bottom of the sixth when he made the Cubs’ Fergie Jenkins pay for laying it over the plate, driving the ball into the seats to tie the game at 1-1.
That was about all the offense as pitcher after pitcher mowed down the opposing bats. The game stayed even at 1 until the top of the 15th inning, when Jim “Catfish” Hunter made a mistake to Tony Perez and the Reds’ third baseman made him pay. Tony Perez sent Catfish Hunter’s pitch over the left-field fence. This game went into the record books for both the longest All-Star Game as well as the first game which home runs accounted for all the scoring. Tony Perez received the Most Valuable Player Award. All three runs came courtesy of the long ball, the first by National Leaguer Ritchie Allen, the second by Brooks Robinson, and the game-winner by Tony Perez. The National League won 2-1 against the American League.
