The National League had thirty-four wins, eighteen losses, and one tie through this Midsummer Classic. This went down as a win even though only one player had more than one hit. Nearly fifty years of Midsummer Classic history, from 1933 to 1981, and this was the first All-Star Game ever played outside of the United States. Olympic Stadium hosted the 1982 Midsummer Classic on July 13, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. This was the one of the worst performances ever put on by the American League. Somehow they managed a single run in the first inning and were left swinging at air the rest of the game. With two out in the second, Dennis Eckersley walked Dale Murphy and Dave Concepcion [with only one home run in three-hundred twenty-eight-bats] homered.
The National League scored again on Eckersley in the third when Ruppert Jones tripled and scored on Pete Rose’s sacrifice fly. The American League gave it a shot in the seventh, putting runners on second and third with one out, but Mario Soto struck out Willie Wilson and Buddy Bell. The change in venue did not help the American League, as Dave Concepcion drilled a two-run homer to lead the National League to the victory. The final run in the sixth inning of the 1982 All-Star Game was made possible by two Canadians: Al Oliver who doubled and scored, and Gary Carter, who singled and drove in Oliver. Ozzie Smith made a truly spectacular defensive play to rob the American League two additional runs. Lance Parrish tied then broke the record during the 1982 All-Star Game when he caught Al Oliver, Ozzie Smith and Steve Sax attempting to steal second. Dave Concepcion received the Most Valuable Player Award. This marked the eleventh consecutive victory for the National League but unfortunately for them, things were about to change. The National League destroyed the American League by 4-1 win.
