The 1991 Midsummer Classic which was played on July 9, 1991, at the Skydome in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. This was the second Midsummer Classic to be held in Canada and became an instant classic as several records fell along with the National League. Cal Ripken, Jr. was hitting with power in key situations, as he has been doing through the first three months of the season. Ripken hitting .348 with eighteen home runs and fifty-four runs batted in at the midsummer break, slammed a three-run homer to center field in the third, bringing in Rickey Henderson and Wade Boggs. Ryne Sandberg’s one-out double in the third marked the National League’s first extra-base hit since 1987. Trailing 3-2, the National League put its first two batters on base in the sixth but could not score.
In the seventh inning, Joe Carter singled to left field and was then moved around the bases to second courtesy of the first ever All-Star call of catcher interference, it was against Craig Biggio. Dennis Eckersley, who came in during the ninth with a two run lead, earned the save and became the first All-Star pitcher with three careers Midsummer Classic saves. Once again, the National League displayed an anemic offense that was unable to perform at the plate. The American League’s fourth consecutive win, proved that it was not just luck. The Americans were back after several decades of disappointment and they were not done yet. President George Bush and Canadian prime minister attended the 1991 All-Star Game. The American League won the match 4-2 against the National League. Cal Ripken, Jr. received the Most Valuable Player Award.
