The 2000 Midsummer Classic was played on July 11, at Turner Field in Atlanta, Georgia. The 2000 All-Star game was originally scheduled to take place at Florida’s Pro Player Park, but Major League Baseball “pulled the game” on November 30, 1998, embarrassed by the 1997 dismantling of the franchise following a World Series championship and the team’s last-place finish during the 1998 season. This was the first time in which the pre-game was a celebration of family as the All-Stars took their positions on the field with their children. The player’s wives were along the-base line and each All-Star was introduced with his children at their sides. A new century of All- Stars took the field in Atlanta, this time it was played at Turner Field instead of Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium as it had been twenty-years before. Surprisingly, this game allowed only one homerun, which came from the Brave’s Chipper Jones who became the thirteenth player to hit an All-Star home in his home ballpark.
In spite of this local hero’s performance, the star of the game was Yankee Derek Jet who was only filling in for an injured Alex Rodriguez. On a humid night that needed some juice and may be juiced ball with the likes of Mark McGwire, Ken Griffey Jr. and Mike Piazza sidelined, the American League won its fourth in a row and for the 10th time in 13 games. The American League broke on top in the third inning when Brown inexplicably lost his control, walking Roberto Alomar, surrendering a single to Jeter and walking Jason Giambi and Carl Everett to force in a run. The damage would have been worse if not for a twisting, back to the infield catch by National League center fielder Jim Edmonds on a drive hit by Mike Bordick. The American League, dominating the Midsummer Classic in the era of power baseball, won without the aid of home run against eight National League pitchers. Much of the damage was perpetrated by Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter, who collected three hits, drove in two runs and scored another en route to Most Valuable Player honors. Jeter became the first Yankees player ever to win the All-Star Most Valuable Player award. The National League stars managed nine hits off of American League pitchers, but could not break find their way home. They contributed to their own downfall with two errors and a difficult third inning during which Dodgers right-handed Kevin Brown walked three batters. The American won 6-3.
